Shannon Bream listed off a series of policy positions from the Democratic Socialists of America platform on Fox News Sunday and asked DSA national co-chair Megan Romer to confirm or deny each one. Romer confirmed every single one.
Abolish the Senate? "True." Replace the presidency and Supreme Court? "Yep." Abolish ICE? "Absolutely." Open borders with amnesty? "As a long-term plan, yep." Defund the Pentagon? "Absolutely." Abolish prisons? "Yeah, again, as part of a long-term program, yeah." Government ownership of most large corporations? "Yeah, absolutely."
Romer offered one attempt at intellectual framing. She called the Senate "an anachronistic institution" that "comes from the British House of Lords." Which is a fun take on the body that James Madison designed as a deliberative check on mob rule — but constitutional history isn't really the DSA's strong suit. Their strong suit is saying the quiet part into a microphone and then wondering why people get nervous.
Most political movements at least have the survival instinct to obscure their most radical positions behind euphemisms. "Reform" instead of "abolish." "Reimagine" instead of "defund." "Public investment" instead of "government seizure of private corporations." The DSA skipped the focus-group step entirely. Romer sat across from Bream on a Sunday morning and rattled off the whole list like she was ordering breakfast.
The timing matters. The DSA has been running candidates inside the Democratic Party's infrastructure — Zohran Mamdani in New York being the most visible recent example. Former DNC chair Jaime Harrison has tried to draw a line between mainstream Democrats and DSA-affiliated candidates, insisting the DSA operates as a separate entity. Romer undercut that argument with one word: she called the Democratic Party "a ballot line" — meaning the DSA uses it as a vehicle, not a home.
Sen. John Fetterman, not exactly a right-wing firebrand, labeled the DSA's platform "anarchy." When John Fetterman thinks you've gone too far left, you've lapped the field.
Most Americans don't need a political science degree to understand what it means when someone wants to eliminate the Senate, disband border enforcement, empty the prisons, and hand corporations to the government. They've seen that movie. It doesn't end with universal prosperity.
