Maria Bartiromo hosted three shows on Fox News and Fox Business. All of them rated number one. On Wednesday, after 12 and a half years, the network fired her without a televised sign-off, without an on-air goodbye, without so much as a segment acknowledging she existed.
Her crime? She told the White House that Fox News had secretly instructed its anchors not to cover what the President of the United States said in a primetime address.
Here's what happened. In July, President Trump delivered a nationally televised speech asserting that China had compromised voting machines, bribed American journalists, and orchestrated a fake ballot scheme to inflate Biden's 2020 vote totals. Trump claimed U.S. intelligence agencies possessed evidence of foreign election meddling both before and after the election — and then concealed it.
Fox News responded by issuing private written guidance to senior employees directing them to steer their coverage away from Trump's claims. The network that bills itself as the home of conservative media quietly told its biggest names to look the other way. According to reporting from the Status newsletter and Dylan Byers at Puck News, when a White House official pressed Bartiromo about Fox's conspicuous lack of coverage, she shared the text message containing the network's internal guidance.
Fox says that violated her employment agreement. So they fired her. "We thank Maria for her work over the last 12 and a half years and wish her all the best on her next chapter," the network said in a statement so hollow you could hear it echo.
Bartiromo, 58, has retained attorney Bryan Freedman — the same caliber of legal representation you bring in when you're not planning to go quietly. Her show "Mornings with Maria" on Fox Business has already been renamed "Mornings with Fox Business." "Maria Bartiromo's Wall Street" becomes "FBN's Wall Street," hosted by Cheryl Casone and rotating anchors. "Sunday Morning Futures" goes to Jason Chaffetz this weekend. They didn't just fire her. They scrubbed her name off the building.
President Trump responded on Truth Social late Wednesday night. "I can't believe Maria Bartiromo is no longer going to have her great show(s) on FoxNews/Business. Three different shows, always number one." He called her "a true warrior."
The pattern here is getting difficult to ignore. Tucker Carlson — gone. The highest-rated host in cable news history, shown the door in 2023 after Fox settled the Dominion lawsuit for $787.5 million. Now Bartiromo, the woman who made history in 1993 as the first person to report live from the New York Stock Exchange floor, who spent two decades building her reputation at CNBC before bringing it to Fox — fired for the offense of transparency.
Left-wing outlets are framing this as Bartiromo being punished for "leaking." Which is a fascinating word choice when what she actually did was confirm to the White House that a major news network was suppressing coverage of a presidential address. If a CNN anchor had leaked internal memos showing the network was burying a story favorable to Democrats, the same press would be nominating them for a Pulitzer.
Fox News built its entire brand on being the one network that wouldn't do what the others do — wouldn't spike stories, wouldn't take marching orders from the establishment, wouldn't punish journalists for committing journalism. That was the deal. That was the whole pitch.
The network that was supposed to be the alternative keeps firing anyone who acts like it.
