America is about to turn 250 years old. To mark the occasion, the U.S. Mint is striking a new $1 gold coin featuring President Donald Trump on the front — right next to the words "In God We Trust."
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the announcement Tuesday. The coin features Trump on the obverse, with the reverse displaying the U.S. seal and the number 250, commemorating the nation's semiquincentennial. It's a limited commemorative issue tied to one of the most significant anniversaries in American history.
Before the outrage cycle gets going, here's the part the press won't mention: this isn't new. The Presidential $1 Coin Program ran from 2007 to 2016 and put every president from Washington to Reagan on a dollar coin. Obama's Treasury Department oversaw the minting of Nixon's coin. No CNN segments. No breathless panel discussions. Just a coin.
The legal authority exists. The historical precedent exists. The occasion — a once-in-a-quarter-millennium anniversary — exists.
What's new is Trump. And that's what's driving Democrats crazy.
"As America commemorates 250 years of independence, the U.S. Mint will begin striking this new $1 gold coin to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism," Bessent said. "Featuring President Trump, it celebrates the strength of American values, and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all."
The timing isn't accidental. Trump marked the 250th anniversary at Mount Rushmore just days ago with a speech about American founding principles and the threats against them. The coin, the speech, and the anniversary all tell the same story — an administration deliberately and unapologetically wrapping itself in founding-era patriotism.
Critics will call it vanity. They call everything vanity. At some point the pattern stops being vanity and starts being branding — the kind of branding that drives a certain segment of Washington absolutely insane precisely because it works.
Washington's on the quarter. Lincoln's on the five. Jefferson, Roosevelt, Kennedy — American currency has always honored American presidents. Trump ended penny production during his second term, closing out one of the longest runs in U.S. Mint history. Now a new coin joins the lineup, the sitting president's profile stamped next to the founding motto of the republic.
"In God We Trust."
Funny how that phrase bothers some people more than the face does.
